Profile Evaluation

by ganeshvarun91089 » Thu Sep 05, 2013 8:58 am
Hi Experts,

I would like to know my chances in Ross, Kelly, UTA McCombs, Darden and Tepper based on profile provided below. Also it would be helpful if you could suggest any other schools for which i have a realistic chance.

My Profile:

GMAT: 710 (Q 49/V 39)

GPA: 8.1/10

Work Experience:
Have been working for the past 26 months as a Business Analyst in one of the world's largest pure play decision sciences and analytics firm (By the time i start my MBA, i would have completed 3 years of work) I work with a world leading retailer to institutionalize data-driven decision making in their organization. I do this by the helping them harness the power of big data and analytics & decision sciences in their operational and strategic decisions.
Some of the work done includes Forecasting and driver analysis: Forecasting at various levels to support strategic, tactical and operational strategies of client; driver analysis to understand actionable levers etc
Cannibalization, new store location analysis, Market Basket Analysis, affinity analysis, event modeling, survey analysis etc. are some of the other significant projects for the retailer.

I would like to specialize in strategic consulting in retail sector to scale new heights. It is also in line with what i have been doing till now.

Any thoughts would be really appreciated.

Thanks!

ganeshvarun91089 -

Thanks for reaching out to Clear Admit for some advice about your candidacy. While the information that you provided is certainly useful, the devil is going to be in details of your profile in order to assess how competitive you're going to be with the schools you listed.

Where did you go to undergrad? What was your major? Where are you from? While your work sounds relatively robust for someone who has a lower-than-average amount of years of experience, what kind of impact and results have you achieved in your work so far? What leadership experiences have you had? What are some of your extracurricular activities? I'd want to know a bit more about your goals to help determine whether the program is a good fit to you academically and from a recruiting/employer standpoint.

All of these individual things are going to significantly influence how the Adcom looks at your candidacy.

Overall, though, I'm going to make a few assumptions so I can give you a little feedback. I'm guessing you're from India given your user name and the format of your GPA. As I mentioned, where you went to school is going to important to many of the top MBA programs as they will be more enthusiastic about Indian candidates who went to an IIT-caliber program (just like they would likely be more inclined to favor someone who went to Harvard for undergrad rather than a lesser-known school). While your GMAT is going to be right around/above the overall average for all of these schools (Ross/Darden are a bit over 700 each year, Tepper/McCombs at about 690, Kelly 660), the average for Indian candidates is going to be considerably higher so you'll be a bit below average when compared against other candidates with similar profiles.

On the work experience end of things, we typically see successful candidates having 4 - 6 years of work experience at the time of enrollment. It's also very important to have done substantive work, though. Assuming that you can articulate some key accomplishments/results, your impact on your firm and clients, etc., your analytic work will probably stand out pretty well to the programs you're considering (notably Tepper given their history and focus on management science). To be successful in your applications, you'll want to be sure to demonstrate that your work experience has been significant enough that you'll be a productive contributor in the classroom and attractive to recruiters.

I hope that this helps a bit, and I'd encourage you to contact us through our website for a free 30 minute phone consultation where we can discuss more specifics about your profile. Best wishes to you in your MBA pursuits!

Regards,
Jon
