Did I beat it??

by felipz24 » Fri Aug 30, 2013 10:08 pm
Hi all, I've been reading the forums for a while, it's a great resource! I took the GMAT today after a few months of preparation. I scored a 730 (Q46 V44). Although I'm definitely happy with the overall 730 (which is a 96 percentile), I'm concerned about the Q46 (which is a 68 percentile). I work in private equity and have a 3.5 in liberal arts, so was hoping to nail the quant. Most of my practice scores were in the Q48-Q50 range. My admissions consultant is telling me that business schools like to see "balanced" scores, and that this is balanced, though I was under the impression that "balanced" was based on percentiles and not the 1-51 score. I'm curious what people think about this idea of a "balanced" score. I hate to say it, but I'm considering re-taking it, though most people around me are telling me I'm crazy...

Hi felipz24,

A 730 is a fantastic score, so you should be proud of yourself. While the Q46 doesn't appear great (from a percentile standpoint), it's still a really strong performance. Your GMAT will be a strong contributor to your overall application; just be sure that the other parts of your app are as strong as they can be. Your Admissions Consultant should be able to help guide you through the rest of the process. The ONLY conceivable reason to retake is if a Business School Admissions Rep specifically tells you to (and I don't really think that's too likely to occur).
