A tough OG CR prob:

by \'manpreet singh » Tue Jun 25, 2013 11:20 pm
It is true of both men and women that those who marry as young adults live longer than those who never marry. This does not show that marriage causes people to live longer, since, as compared with other people of the
same age, young adults who are about to get married have fewer of the unhealthy habits that can cause a person to have a shorter life, most notably smoking and immoderate drinking of alcohol.
Which of the following, if true, most strengthens the argument above?
(A) Marriage tends to cause people to engage less regularly in sports that involve risk of bodily harm.
(B) A married person who has an unhealthy habit is more likely to give up that habit than a person with the same habit who is unmarried.
(C) A person who smokes is much more likely than a nonsmoker to marry a person who smokes at the time of marriage, and the same is true for people who drink alcohol immoderately.
(D) Among people who marry as young adults, most of those who give up an unhealthy habit after marriage do not resume the habit later in life.
(E) Among people who as young adults neither drink alcohol immoderately nor smoke, those who never marry live as long as those who marry.

Ans is E

We need to support
"marriage does not causes people to live longer"
to support, look for an explanation irrespective of marriage for people to live longer/shorter

A - talks about marriage's after effects, hence irrelevant
B - says married people have more chances of leaving bad habits, resulting in their longer lives - explains longer lives of people mostly married who leave bad habits, but what if most of the people with bad habits marry (possible answer - not very satisfying - keep searching)
C - takes the context far off from what we are searching
D - talks only of married people who give up bad habits - too small a set to conclude anything about superset
E - says people who do not have bad habits live longer (irrespective of marriage) - crisp and clear

certainly a 700 level question. had to read the problem twice and took about 3 minutes to solve. thanks for posting!
Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It is a very mean and nasty place and it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't how hard you hit; it's about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward. How much you can take, and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done. Now, if you know what you're worth, then go out and get what you're worth. But you gotta be willing to take the hit, and not pointing fingers saying you ain't where you are because of him, or her, or anybody. Cowards do that and that ain't you. You're better than that! Answer is B because,it strenthens the connection between a married person and unhealthy habits.
It implies that marriage is not the reason for shorter life but, the unhealthy habits are.
