How come, Am I missing anything logic here?

When I solved this Q first time, I marked D as answer and obviously it is wrong.

in D, yes, 'his' is confusing. In C, his is clear because of word 'own'. 'Own' keeps the intended meaning as it is.

In D we are not sure whether Mozart was accompanying to demonstrate his (own or father's) talents

Pronoun ambiguity is no more a big issue as evident in many official problems. That's why please look out for other issues here.

It seems you have already narrowed it down to C and D.
Between capitals of Europe (C) and Europe's capitals (D), former is preferable.
C uses simple past whereas D uses past progressive tense. In this context, simple past is preferable.

P.S. Please note, if at all you have to make a guess on tenses on GMAT, please keep yourself away from progressive tenses. This does not give a cent percent hit rate; however, it is better than blind guess work.
