Ratio

by sparkles3144 » Tue May 28, 2013 1:52 pm
If the ratio of 4 to 5.5 is equal to the ratio of y to 2 3/8, then y =

(A) 11/8
(B) 3/2
(C) 14/9
(D) 19/11
(E) 15/8

This is what I did

4 / 5.5 = y /2 (3/8)

y = (8 * 19)/11

That answer is not even there in the options :(

I don't think I understood it properly.

Answer is D

Thanks!

LHS: 5.5 = 11/2
4 / 5.5 = 8/11
RHS: 2 3/8 = 19/8 and ratio is 8y/19
Now if LHS = RHS then 8/11 = 8y / 19
y = (8 * 19)/(11 * 8) = 19/11

Ans D

4/(5.5) = y/(2 3/8)
8/(11) = y/(19/8)
Cross multiply to get: (8)(19/8) = (11)(y)
Simplify: 19 = 11y
Solve for y: y = 19/11

Answer: D
