age, experience & MBA

by guttinga » Thu Aug 07, 2008 7:20 am
Hi,

I'm thinking of applying to MBA programs this year.

If I was accepted and started in the fall 2009, I would be 25 and I would ultimately have about 3 years of experience.

So basically I'm applying with 2 years of experience (IT government consulting). I have a 700 GMAT, 3.69 gpa -- my undergrad degree is in History.

Should I wait another year and aim to go in 2010? Am I too young? And will my chances to get into a better program improve if I wait?
thanks

Hi there!!

I completely understand your concerns regarding when to apply to business school. Here are a couple of things to consider as you make your decision:

- The average years full time work experience (FTWE) of an incoming student ranges from 4- 5 years. Typically, the minimal threshold is 2 years.
- However, the recent trend at some of the top schools (e.g. Harvard) has been to admit folks with less FTWE and who are a bit younger.

With all that being said, don't focus solely on the # of years FTWE and your age. Rather, take an honest look and assess whether you have had the time to demonstrate leadership (professionally and in your outside activities). Also, assess whether you know what you want to be "when you grow up."

Admissions committees are looking for applicants who have had an impact (that is why the # years FTWE tends to be higher). And, they are looking for people that have been out in the workforce long enough to really know what they want to do professionally.

So, as you consider when to apply, if you feel that you can show that you have had significant leadership experiences and can articulate your career goals - then, in my opinion, you are ready!!

Let me know if you have any other questions or need clarification!
