C --> amount is wrong

between B and E, both looks correct. B can be choosen as the "number of applications" is redundant. "the number" conveys the same meaning as "the number of applications" in this sentence.

I chose B.

Hmmmm .. I dont think it can be E.

I remember reading in Manhattan SC that : if two actions took place in the past at different times then 1) should be denoted by past perfect (had) and the other should be denoted by the simple past .

If u chose B then u would be violating this rule ..
Can some one explain this ?

I agree B and E seem to be against the rule:

Earlier Past action start with had (past participle) to the later in time past action (simple past). Secondly the number doesnt seem to refer back to applicaitons, leaving open the number of 'what'. A and E solve this. E dropped because of the rule, A complies to it. So A seems the best answer. BTW which books are these SC and its official answer from?

WHY A and D wrong?

A & D are not right because of the usage of "this". "This" means that 150 rose and not the applications. Better way to use is "The Number" or "The Number of Applications"
