Where am i going wrong

I took my first GMAT in June 2012 scored 580 (q48 v22). I knew my verbal was the weak are but i was hoping for some kind of miracle, which did not happen. I worked on my verbal and started seeing the progress in my tests. I started scoring around 710 in the GMAT prep tests with few repeats. So i took the test again today (May 11th 2013) and it broke my confidence complete when I saw the score of 590 (q 43 v 28) on screen. I neglected quant during my as I knew this is my strong part but I was disheartened to see that marks declined with some improvement in verbal. I did not know what happened as i was focused during the test and feeling confident. I keep on thinking that my dream of getting into UCLA is against GOD's wish. Not sure if I should try again. Has anyone else faced similar problem and if can share some tip which can help me. I have been a meritorious student all my life and not an easy quitter.

If you had maintained your 48 quant score for the retake, your total score would have been about 640. That's a nice increase.

As far as what went wrong, I think you already answered that here: I neglected quant during my studies

Having said that, your 700+ practice test scores suggest that your skills are strong. Is it possible you experienced some test anxiety that may have significantly impacted your score? If so, then you may need to work on that.

Thanks Brent for your reply. It has motivated me to appear again. And i will do that. I have to take my score to 700+ in order to get into school of my dream. Anxiety definitely impacts me but i have not been able to to overcome this so far. I watched the video and would try to follow the techniques and hope for the best.

Any reply from students who faced similar situation as mine would also help.

Just to add... Confidence in the material will help with your test anxiety as well. As you saw, when you didn't prep for quant, you fell. This is because you were not as familiar with the material. Take your time in your preparation so that you are fully prepared. You have the ability, you just need to put it all together.
