Please Evaluate

by nickp33 » Sun Aug 03, 2008 10:43 am
Hi,

Rather than have you evaluate my current profile, I would like for you to evaluate my chances after meeting the goals I have set for myself.

Current:

-I am a 28 year old married father of two.
-I have (3) years sales experience in the hospitality industry. Prior to that, I was a manager and head of sales at a fitness club with about 20 staff members reporting to me.
-I have a 2.75 GPA from Shorter College with a degree in Religion.
-I'm very active in local Atlanta hospitality associations.
-Extracurricular activities include softball and scuba diving

Goals

- 670+ GMAT this fall
- Enroll in online classes at Kennesaw State University (AACSB accredited) to create an alternative transcript. I plan to take (2) classes in Spring 09, (1-2) classes Summer 09 and (2) classes in Fall of 09. All of these classes will be business oriented along with statistics.
- Apply to UGA's Terry College of Business to enroll in Fall of 2010.

My question would be:

(1) Will 5-6 classes (assuming A's) be enough to counter balance my previous GPA woes? The low grades came exclusively from Freshman and Sophomore years.
(2) Would online classes hurt me? I do not believe the transcript recognizes the difference.
(3) What are my chances of being accepted after meeting these goals?
(4) What else can I do to increase my chances of being accepted to Terry College of Business?

Before I embark on this journey and ask my family to sacrifice the next two years, I want to make sure my goal is attainable.

Thank you in advance!

Dear nickp33,

Assuming you meet the goals listed, I do think you will be competitive for the Terry School. You will want to visit campus and attend any Terry events over the next 18 months or so, making a positive personal connection with the admissions staff. I do not think you need to take 6 courses, but you can if you are are interested in the coursework beyond building an alternative transcript. I think 3-4 classes would suffice. It is best to take math and statistics courses, perhaps an accounting course, as preparation for business school. Online coursework is prevalent these days, so I do not think it matters.

Best of luck,
Lisa

Thanks Lisa! I'm surprised to hear that 4 classes will be enough to overcome by substandard GPA. However, that is encouraging!
