Long-term goal question

by Spandrew » Tue Apr 16, 2013 7:24 pm
Hello,
My name is Andrew. I will start my application this coming fall, and I am currently in the process of developing my post-MBA plan. I am currently running an English education program that I founded in partnership with two U.S. universities. I graduated with a degree in Korean and Economics and have spent multiple years volunteering and interning in East Asia.

My long-term goal is to found and operate a large-scale, globally oriented English education business. However, I am considering delaying the launch of that venture until several years after the completion of my MBA in order to spend some time working in consulting with U.S. firms entering East Asian markets. My question is this. Which path to my long-term goal is most sensible to the MBA adcom? Building and launching the business during or immediately after the MBA? Or, spending several years immediately after my MBA working in consulting before launching the company? Given that I am currently a moderately successful entrepreneur, does the adcom expect my post-MBA path to be entrepreneurship only?

Thank you in advance for your advice.

Andrew

Andrew,
Thanks for dropping by. Well, either can work. However if you were to go the entrepreneurial path it would be contingent upon the results, whereas the consulting path is more of a safe bet which is why I recommend that path. Working in educational consulting will be more probably, and will probably be more successful, and the AdCom knows this. And once you do that, then you can go ahead with your entrepreneurial goals.
