Weight of a Masters Degree

Hello,

I was just curious what value a Masters degree adds to an application. I am considering a non-MBA masters degree from a top university in Canada. My GPA in my undergrad was pretty low (2.7), but trended upwards. If I was to achieve a high GPA in this degree would that help my chances of admission to a top MBA program?

Well, it depends in what, and how it is related to your goals. A 2.7 won't help you that much, to be honest, even in upward trending... although if you have strong work experience and good UG grades it shouldn't harm either. A Masters is most effective when you get it in a deeply technical field that requires that masters for the knowledge.

It was actually my undergrad where I had a 2.7. Since then I have built a solid resume consisting of rapid advancement & leadership and strong volunteering & extracurricular experience. Even during my undergrad I had strong extracurricular experience and was an TA for multiple business courses.

The company I currently work for is ranked, according to numerous business publications (Bloomberg,Forbes,Fortune), as one of the top companies in the world right now. Soon they will be expanding their operations to Asia. The program I want to pursue is the a Masters of International Business because it will allow me to work in Japan & buy me some time to continue learning the language. Ultimately, I would like to use this experience to continue working with my current company but in Tokyo.

I am very confident I could hit it out of the park (grade wise) in the program. I finished my UG with a 3.9GPA. My 2.7GPA is primarily due to very low marks in my first 2 year and is a terrible indication of my work ethic and aptitude.

Would high grades in this program help when I apply to a top-tier MBA 3-4 years later?

For sure high grades would help, every little bit you can do to prove your academic capabilities and intelligence will help (the TA stuff is great too) And overall your plan seems like a good one, and your profile very promising.
