Hi all,

I signed up for a Kaplan GMAT Advantage on-sight course. My course started late January, and ended in mid-March. I started preparing for the GMAT by going through my Kaplan book last October. I went through the entire book, and then took a diagnostic CAT. My first CAT was a 530 on Kaplan. I only used Kaplan materials to study for the most part. I dabbled in the OG ( I think I got around 20% through it), but I didn't like the fact that answers were not elaborated. I only used Kaplan materials (online Flex sessions, prerecorded sessions, practice questions, etc.).

I worked my way up from a 530 on the Kaplan CATs to a 650 on the CATs three weeks ago- I was beyond excited. In the last few weeks, my score went down in the Kaplan CAT to a 630, then two days before the test I got a 600 on a CAT. I thought this was just nerves, but I took the actual GMAT and got a 600 on test day! All in all, I took 9 CATs and studied for 6 months. I did take a few breaks in there however, and I didn't really ramp up until the final 2.5 months.

I was beyond mad. I have heard that Kaplan tests are much harder than the real thing, and I had reached a 650 on these CATs!!!! I am in no hurry to apply to business school- I just want to move my score up to a 700. I work full time (50 hours per week),

Study Schedule:
2 hours per week day, 4 hours per day on Saturday, CAT on a Sunday (another 4 hours)

Is it possible to move my score up 100 points? I just want to use the best strategy I can. Do I need to change what I am studying? Should I take it in exactly one month? Two months? Should I retake Kaplan? Do I need to review concepts or stick to problems?

I know the Kaplan strategies and what I am weak at, but I am honestly scared. I am scared that I can't increase my score, and I don't know the best way to change this.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated. I really need some guidance to revamp my study plan.

First off, a 100-point increase is definitely possible. If you read the posts in this very forum, you'll find many students who achieved score increases of 100, 200 and even 300 points. So, I suggest that you set yourself a goal and work towards achieving it.

Did you take any official (GMATPrep) practice tests (https://www.mba.com/the-gmat/download-fr ... tware.aspx) during your prep? These are the best indicators of your abilities since they use official GMAT questions as well as the official GMAT scoring algorithm. Also keep in mind that the GMAT test-makers collect a lot of data on every single question, and every question has been asked in a formal testing environment, so that the well-prepared test-takers are trying their very best to answer every question.

While many test-prep companies have great practice tests, those companies would never suggest that their tests are as accurate as the official practice tests. The 3rd-party tests don't use retired GMAT questions, they don't use the official scoring algorithm, and the data collected on each question cannot be as accurate, because the students taking the tests aren't doing so in a formal testing environment.

So, while 3rd-party tests are great for practicing your test-taking skills, and for identifying weaknesses, you shouldn't use them as the sole basis for predicting your readiness for the real exam.

Okay, where to go from here.

Since you haven't done much with the OG yet, I suggest that you start there (awesome resource!). As you work through the OG, be sure to use an Error Log (aka Improvement Chart). This will help you identify your weak areas. Once you've identified some weaknesses, you can work on strengthening them. You can find a free downloadable Improvement Chart here: https://www.beatthegmat.com/mba/gmat-error-log

I hope that helps.

Cheers,
Brent

Thanks for the quick reply!

I will take an official mba CAT this weekend.

How long should I wait to retake the GMAT? 1 month? 6 weeks? 2 months?

What else besides going through the OG and taking the official CATs should I do to increase my score? Any suggestions on a revamped study plan?

Thanks!

I typically suggest that students achieve their target score on at least 2 practices tests before they take the official test. How long it takes to do this will depend on the amount of time you can devote to studying.
