these vs. those

Since I am not native speaker, I really have trouble to figure out whether i have to use these or those.

can anyone give me a tip how to remember?

Hi Charlotte,

The best adivce I can give you is to think of the object/nouns in terms of location. Are they close to the speaker or far away.

These apples are next to me.
Those apples are far away.

These cars are new but those ones are old.

You can imaging their location and hopefully this will help.
