Stacy, please share surprises

by tolmar » Fri Jul 25, 2008 2:07 am
Hi Stacy,

Thanks for all the tips and suggestions so far, it helps a lot!

I wanted to know if you had any surprises with applicants you've helped over the years. Applicants that insisted on getting into a top school, after you've explained them that will be a bit stretching, but got accepted anyway.

I'm talking about applicants that had low grades or less leadership roles, less extracurricular activity or submitted the application late in the process.

To me (and I think to others as well) it will be more than encouraging to know that not only "perfect" applicants have a chance, but also normal ones :)

Thanks

Dear tolmar,

There are applicants every year that receive admission to their stretch school. Yes, these are the folks that you would consider below average for a school on paper but somehow put the application package together and compel a school to offer a seat. What makes the difference?

Generally speaking, these folks do a great job of positioning and presenting themselves to the schools. They spend considerable time and effort researching the school, writing their essays and resume, and preparing for their interview. In most cases, they also visit the campus and establish a personal connection with someone on the admissions committee. When you are 1 of 1000 applicants, you have to find a way to positively distinguish yourself, putting a face to your application. Lastly, these folks utilize their resources and networks for assistance.

Best of luck,
Lisa

Thanks for answering.

I am not sure what exactly do you mean by networks and resources?

Networks and resources are people and places you can go to for help. For example, do you know anyone or does someone you know have a relationship with someone who can help you? Perhaps an alumnus of a business school you are targeting? Or someone who works with/hires MBAs? Places could be websites (like this one), books, or events (like The MBA Tour or World MBA Tour).

Lisa
