Hello,
I graduated from UC Merced with a BS in Biological Science. I went through a career change and now work in the Entertainment and Fashion industry in the marketing sector. I want to start my own Marketing and PR firm in the future and feel that obtaining an MBA can provide me the tools and education in running a business. However, my undergraduate degree GPA is very low. When I graduated I had a 2.4 GPA, but have taken upper-division courses at a 4 year university to have an additional transcript for graduate programs to consider. I calculated my overall GPA with the additional courses and have exactly a GPA of 3.0, however I still feel that my Undergrad GPA would be looked at the most. I took significant course while working (like economics, Marketing, Calculus, Stats, Filmmaking, Cinematography, etc), but I dont know if they will mean anything to the admissions board.
I have worked for an Entertainment and Luxury Marketing/Advertising/Public Relations firm with offices in LA, NY, and London called ID Public Relations for about 3 years now, 4 years when I matriculate. I have moved up the ranks since I started at the firm, went from being a Junior Account Executive (entry level; basically an assistant) to Account Executive in the Entertainment Marketing and Event Production departments in the company.
The founder of the company said she would right a letter of rec for me and I also have a letter of rec from a prof that taught my Filmmaking course I took after I graduated undergrad (I really want to working in the Entertainment industry and thought having this teacher as my recommender would show my passion for this industry).
My GMAT score is good, but not great. I got a 590 on the GMAT test. I plan to retake it in May so that I can start the application process during the summer (if its up by then). The schools that I am looking at are NYU Stern (the MBA or MBA/MFA in Filmmaking & Producing; its another one of my passions that I want to implement in my career), UCLA , Pepperdine University, SUNY Baruch College Zicklin School of Business in NYC, Fordham University, Loyola Marymount University, USC, and Chapman University (MBA or MBA/MFA in Filmmaking and Producing). I am also interested in international schools like Imperial Business school in London and Brunel School of Business in London.
Please give me any type of advice or suggestion that could make my application stronger. Would it be best to get a higher score on the GMAT? Should take more significant classes? Should I wait another year to apply and have 5 years of experience instead of 4?
Also do I have a chance at admission to any of these schools? I know some of them are top tier and some are on the lower side, but I just want to have see if it is possible to apply and get admitted to any of them. Thank you
