Seems unlikely, since clauses in GMAT do not generally end in a preposition. So the sentence you have mentioned would perhaps be articulated in GMAT this way:

Through research, universities need to help the regions in which they are present.

However, if you have seen an official question that is similar to the one you have stated, do let us know.
