600-730 with three weeks study

by [email protected] » Sat Feb 09, 2013 4:54 am
Hey guys,

After being initially overly-ambitious and giving myself six weeks to study over my christmas holiday I kept on procrastinating the study and before I knew it I had twenty days left to study for the exam. I looked through all the forums and borrowed the manhattan gmat books from the library, but it honestly took me more than two days to work out some sort of study plan and even then I could see progress wasn't going to be fast enough. My first 'diagnostic' test was 600, and this was mostly due to being incredibly rusty with my mathematics.

Eventually I stumbled upon the economist online gmat, read all the reviews and decided to take a chance and spend the money. It was perfect for me as I didn't need to waste my time planning what I was going to do, a particular weak point for me, and it 'prepared me for the exam' (I can't say it necessarily improved my skills, rather showed how to improve their efficiency). I don't want to make this sound like a sell, but just wanted to say that for me it really worked. I got through about 50% of the verbal material (but english is my main language), and 75% of the quant course. Didn't have time to practice any essays or IR - just googled a few guides on the essays the night before.

The exam wasn't too difficult, it was the sort of questions I expected and I knew I wasn't getting them all right, but just tried to focus on getting as much right as I could and not getting stuck on anything. The essay took longer to start than I expected, faltered a bit in the beginning, but when I got writing I managed to get three good paragraphs (plus introduction) on the page. I saw time was running out as I started my conclusion, and decided it would look better if I deleted the half-sentence than if it was really obviously unfinished. This must have paid off (I assume the computer marked me) as I ended up getting a 6.

Overall:

Quant: 48 (78%)
Verbal: 41 (93%)
Total: 730 (96%)
Essay: 6 (90%)
IR: 8 (92%)

I read all the forums which said the OG was a must, but I honestly had no time to go through it which I was stressing about (but decided it was probably a better idea for me to practice with my chosen method than panic and overload myself)

I started studying around the 5th of Jan and sat the exam on the 23rd with about 4 hours of focused study each day.

Initial diagnostic: 600
Economist Gmat Practice Test: 630
