by sravanreddy » Tue Jul 08, 2008 5:05 pm
HI
i am currently a final year engineering student in Hyderabad India from a very reputed engineering college.
i want to pusue my mba directly after my college.
My profile
GMAT (690 Q48,V35)AWA 5.0
GRE (1430 Q800 V630)
B.Tech 62%
10+2 91.4%
10 83%

i have done a bit of serach and on most of the websites of b schools state that they accept college freshers with good academic background and extracurricular activities
My academics are reasnobly strong a 62% in Electrical engineering is a First Division Score
i have done the following activities
Topped the UN information Test Conducted by United Schools Of India.
Prepared and Presented Two Business Plans.
taken a course in Vedic Mathematics And Yoga.
Enrolled into the National Stock Exchange program for financial market certification.
part time employment for three years with a local tutorial.

Please Evaluate my profile and suggest me some good b-schools to which i can apply and realistically hope to get in.

i performed below my expectations in the first attempt and believe i can improve my score by another 50 points if needed.

Dear sravanreddy,

Gaining admission directly from undergraduate studies is possible, but quite difficult. In addition to strong academics (GPA and GMAT), applicants must demonstrate the maturity to enter the program as well as a strong rationale for why they should enter business school without work experience. Additionally, these applicants need to have proper expectations regarding career opportunities. For schools that do admit applicants without work experience, they tend to limit this group to a small population of the class (generally less than 5-10%).

If you believe you fit this criteria, then you should apply to business school. Programs that consider applicants without work experience vary widely, so I encourage you to identify programs that offer what you want (curriculum, careers, etc) and then determine if the school accepts students without work experience.

Best of luck,
Lisa

Hi Lisa

Thanks a ton for your prompt reply and information
I have been for the past few days searching for bschools that accept college seniors and have observbed that a majority of the top universities accept college seniors. some of the universities i have seen are stanford GSB, Harvard, Yale(silver scholars),Katz
i know all these are top schools and so iam in the process of moving down the ladder to find schools that fit my profile
My question is can i give any of these programs a shot with my current GMAT and academics.

Also i would be grateful if you can name some schools that accept freshers into their programs

THANK YOU
sravan

Dear sravan,

With your current academics and GMAT, I think it would be difficult to get into the programs you mention. It is not impossible, but the competition is fierce and your numbers would be on the lower side for this applicant pool. I do think you will find some great, viable options for you in the top 40. As there is a growing trend to take people directly from undergraduate studies, you might find schools open to your application for fall 2009 entry that have not been in the past. Keep researching and I think you will find some great options.

Good luck,
Lisa

Hi Sravan,

I'm fm Hyd too. A top engg in college in Hyd(JNTU/CBIT/OU??) is irrelevant to your app process. Colleges receive apps from applicants all across India which means you'll be an Indian/Non- IIT/NIIT/BIT/.. They will therefore look at your university which in your case is either JNTU, CBIT or OU

Excuse me for being blunt but you will have to move a lot down the ladder to be accepted into a college. You say 62% which is first-class but there will be applicants with 70 & 80% so your acads will appear on the lower side.

If you are really serious about getting into an MBA college this year, I would advise that you appear for CAT. Top colleges in USA require applicants to have some work-ex, the freshers they take form like 2% of the batch and have an Ivy background. You will be way out of your league in this pool.
