Based on the growth rates of large modern reptiles such as the Galapas tortoise and examinations of fossils of juvenile dinosaurs, scientists estimate that the largest dinosaurs probably lived to be between 100 and 200 years old.

[A] Based on the growth rates of large modern reptiles such as

On the basis of growth rates of large modern reptiles such as

[C] Based on the growth rates of large modern reptiles like

[D] On the basis of growth rates of large modern reptiles, like those of

[E] Based on such growth rates as those of large modern reptiles like

I got this one incorrect. The given OA is B

Remember the series of thing for this kind of questions.

1] Scientists are not based on the growth rates.

2] This is of the form: On the basis of 'x' and 'y' where , 'x' = growth rates of large modern reptiles such as the galapise tortoise and 'y' = examinations of fossils of juvenile dinosaurs.

3] The thing that I learnt from this question is that 'such as' can also be used to give or illustrate only one example. I thought 'such as' is used to give more than 1 examples. but that is incorrect.

I hope this one helped...

"Based on..."is a participial phrase, so it must modify the subject. As you said, it's not the scientists that are based on the growth rates.
