Shattered- 520 in GMAT ( Q-50 , V-15 )

I gave my GMAT today and was devastated to see my final score .
520 ( Quant - 50 ; Verbal- 15 )

Non native for English speaker , I was surprised to see my GMAT score as I was expecting something between ( 600-620 )
GMAT Prep Mock Score : 580
MGMAT 1 : 630
MGMAT 2 : 610

Need advice on figuring out the Verbal Section. I am planning to give GMAT post 40 days , towards December end.

The good news is you had an awesome quant score!

Make a strict schedule and stick to it going through it cover-to-cover. No shortcuts here - if you can get your verbal into the 30's, you're looking at a 650+ score (a 50Q 35V should be good enough for 700-710).

Looking at your quant score, I have a feeling you're settling for a overall score that is less than what you truly deserve. Not knowing your exact nativity or your experience with english, I can't stress this too much but I definitely think you have the brains to beat the GMAT (I'm talking 700+ score)

Go over verbal concepts one by one. Given the low score, I'm guessing you're weak in almost all the areas. For RC: practice reading news articles and journals every day - Harvard Business Review, Wall Street Journal, New Yorker etc.. you should have access to the online articles at least. Don't just read them, try to understand what the writer is trying to tell and summarize each article. Take interest in what you're reading.

For CR: I recommend PowerScore CR Bible. Go through each chapter and try to relate concepts to the OG problems. Irrespective of whether you get the questions right or wrong, understand the reasoning behind each correct or wrong answer.

For SC: Manhattan SC is the best I have seen but may be you should start with some basic high school grammar book if you feel that you're fundamentals in english are not too strong (basic tenses, sentence structures etc..)

General Tips: 40 days might not be enough to do all of the above, especially if you're in a full time job. You might want to push it out a little and aim for a 700+ score. Stay in touch with Quant all through so you don't lose points due to lack of focus in your 2nd attempt. Practice elimitation approach when answering Verbal section. NEVER settle for a "good enough" answer because the BEST answer could be further down.

@Mohankiran : Dude 40 days I say coz I just wanna leave my current job asap and go for higher studies asap . Already we are late for Round 1 deadline of Spring 2013 ( nywaz i think 520 will not take me anywhere :p :p ) , so was thinking to give in Dec last week, so I can apply to Round 2,3 of few decent colleges...

It is ultimately your choice dude. But MBA takes lot of time and money; just make sure you do it for the right reasons and when you're actually ready for it. Wanting to do MBA just to get out of your current job is like taking a risky vacation for 2 years, especially given the current economic situation.

Without knowing where you're from, your age and what colleges you want to apply to, I can't comment further. All I wanted to say is that you have potential, don't throw it away - there are people applying to top 10 colleges in U.S. who are ready to kill for a quant score of 50.

Very interesting situation, because I passed the exam a few days ago and got 540 with Quant 50 and Verbal 15 (!!!). And it's after 1,5 month of studying mostly Verbal and training verbal skills.

I have the same story. 3 MGMAT CAT was about 620-630, GMATprep1 - 640, GMATprep2 - 590, and on the exam - 540. I am a non-native speaker, and passed GMAT in April 2012, getting 550 (Q48, V19). And now I really advanced Sentenced correction and Critical Reasoning, in comparison to April.

Also I can guess that now GMAT is tougher than before June 2012 changes. It's my personal opinion...

If you are planning for 2014 batches, then you can have a comprehensive plan for Verbal. Try to work on 2-3 passages on a daily basis and 10-12 CRs.
SC is concept based so needs good time devotion. Manhattan has the better material.
