My end game is getting accepted to Wharton. Please advise.

Dear themarkac1,

From what you have posted, you have the foundation for a competitive application at Wharton. You will need to make a compelling case and distinguish yourself from similar folks in the applicant pool. Perhaps there are some interesting work projects at your new firm you could highlight? Or from your community activities? I would also suggest visiting the campus and taking advantage of any opportunity to meet with a Wharton representative/alumnus in New York. Basically, you want to put a face to your application.

Both the partners (founders) of my firm went to Wharton and they both know professors. In fact, everyone I worked for since I graduated college went to Wharton (kind of messed up).

How do I tell my current employer that I want to go to grad school? I didn't realize how scared I would be to tell my boss..Please advise.

Dear themarkac,

If you work with a bunch of Wharton MBAs, then they will probably be excited to hear you want to go to school there and help you (if they think you are a good candidate). It is stressful to communicate to your current employer your plans, but it is probably best for you to take the risk and reach out since you work with Wharton alumni. Perhaps ask to meet with your supervisor about your future goals and then tell him/her that you believe this is a necessary component to your professional development? You need to think of how you can make this most palatable--you are giving them a year's notice before you leave, you aspire to go to Wharton based on working with all of the Wharton alumni in the firm, etc. You'll figure out how to say it, just think about it.
