Let the total work to be done be X

now 6 machines take 12 days to complete X work

12=X/6 i.e X = 72

Therefore to complete work in 8 days we need 9 machines
8 = 72/ number of machines

addtional number of machines requires are 9-6 = 3

Rosh,

If 6 machines do the job in 12 days, means that 1 machine alone will do the same job in 6*12=72 days.

If you divide the 72 days by 8 you get the number of machines that you need to perform the job = 9.

So additional machines are 9-6=3.
