IMHO A is the answer.

'took the position' is correct and therefore 'that' is needed. Eliminate C, D and E.

B does not clearly refers to what he held, the position or his society membership.

The position : rank/ the position in an orgnization
A position : a stand/ a stance on an issue etc

Here a position is apt eliminate A/B/C
D is apt

I feel D is correct answer

I will go with (E) which is more concise than (D) and it even didn't alter the meaning of original sentence.

E seems incomplete.... Assuming E doesn't exist i would go for D. I don't see anything wrong with D.

I wouldnt choose B because the modifying phrase for "position" should be closer to it...

hmmm that sounds about right, but what held me back from D & E is the 'a' that begin the D & E choices, it sounded odd to me.

but then again, the 'held it for all his life' phrase positioning in A, B, and C sounds wierd to me too...

Honestly speaking, I first eliminated all choices that had "the" because I thought usage of "the" sounded odd to me...!

My vote for (A) since which refers to the position and there is no ambiguity like "it" in B.

Actually I just realised, the "it" in D is ambiguous too. A is best among all the others..
