Usage of "AMOUNT" in OG question

For the first time in the modern era, non-Hispanic Whites are officially a minority in
California, amounting to a little less than half the population of the state, down from nearly
three-quarters a decade ago.

How is the use of "amounting" is correct here as it refers to non-countable nouns but "non-Hispanic Whites" is countable noun.

"To amount to" is a VERB and it means "to be equivalent with" or "to reach a total of..."
So it is not connected to the noun "amount" used with uncountable nouns.
