Profile and Alternatives

Hi,

It's lovely to see all the tremendous help this forum provides people who typically have crucial, career-altering stages of their life looming up ahead of them. I just wanted to convey my sincere appreciation.

I am an engineering graduate from India. I'm employed in Germany in a multi-national consulting firm specializing in niche sustainability consulting for major-league (Fortune 500) corporations across industries. I came here as an intern for 6 months but my employers liked my work and ethic and decided to extend my internship contract for 6 months. Thereafter they offered me a fulltime position as a Consultant.

However, I feel I need to grow now and would like to drift towards more finance-related roles. I have a great aptitude for the subject, having completed more than a couple of financial management and economics courses during my engineering studies (on the side) and having been an economics enthusiast for a long time, also having actively blogged on the subject.

My bachelor's GPA isn't great (around a 3.0 equivalent) but it does not reflect my aptitude (It'd be a long-shot to prove that but I just threw it out there).

I would like to ask you whether I ought to evaluate alternatives to an MBA in Finance such as an MSc. in Finance and how my profile ranks in both?

I'd be tremendously grateful if you could just voice your blunt opinion on what my options and priorities should be.

With an alternate degree:

1. I save time (I don't really want to work for more than another year before applying)
2. I save money

BUT

I might hit a professional ceiling at some point.

To summarize:

1. 1 year work exp.
2. Plenty of international exposure
3. Keen interest and strong soft skills
4. Displayed career growth
5. Low GPA
6. GMAT targeted at (740-760)

I'd love you insight.

Regards from Deutschland,

Arnav

Guten Tag Deutschland!
:)
Well, lots of stuff to think about here. First of all is the MBA vs. MFin question. ?And its a good one, because there is a lot of crossover between the two both in terms of subject materiel and jobs that people get. But, the basic difference is that: MFin is a TECHNICAL degree focused on finance only. MBA is a more GENERAL degree with a focus on management/consulting. So if you know it's the numbers you love, then MFin may be for you, if it's the people maybe an MBA. People do well from both degrees, and I don't think that one is any more limiting than the other. Depends on your SPECIFIC goals and needs.

Do keep inn mind though, that at this point you don't really have enough experience to apply for an MBA. As for MFin, you really should show some experience and good prior coursework in finance (even if it is just through consulting) to get into excellent programs.

So, I hope this starts churning the waters of your mind, and if you have any other questions or thoughts, just keep on posting!
