tense confusion

Hi,
could somebody explain me which option is correct and why between the 2 mentioned in brackets?

He (fell, had fallen) asleep while he was driving.

He (is living, has been living) in this house (since, for) ten years.

You use had/has when you are trying to describe the order of events. These terms are used when you are describing an event that happened before another.

He has been living in this house for ten years, but plans on moving next week.
