Stanford Peer Reccommendation

by poochnick » Wed Sep 05, 2012 9:16 pm
I'm having trouble choosing a peer recommender.

I started and run my own company and don't have any true work peers! :( I either hired contractors or collaborated for brief projects with people abroad (I'm considering asking them). The one person who has worked recently and closely with me (we've done projects together) is my girlfriend!

At first I thought it was completely inappropriate to have a girlfriend write a peer recommendation. But I found undergrad schools that say it's fine. Now I'm confused.

She's certainly in a position to know and evaluate me as she's seen me in myriad situations from fantastic to difficult.

Any thoughts?

Hi there,

That's a tough one, but I'd definitely advise against using your girlfriend as a recommender. Even though she may have great and valid perspective, it'll be difficult if not near impossible for her to write an objective letter.

Do you have any peers from outside of work -- from extracurricular activities (e.g. soccer team, non profit) that you could tap? That might be your best bet.

Good luck!
