Profile Evaluation for MSc courses

Hi,

I am considering to apply for HEC Paris, ESSEC and St. Gallen for MSc Strategy program.

My profile:
Indian M 25/Engineer: 7.8/10 (from one of the top engg. schools in India)
GMAT 660 Q50 V28
Work Experience: 2 years in boutique consulting co.
Founder of consulting company (mentored 20 startups) [along with my full time job]
E/C: Very good

Please help me with the foll.:

1) I was considering MBA from a top notch school, but I ended up getting a very low GMAT score. The opportunities in my current job are also very limited. Though MBA is my long term plan, I am considering for 1 yr Masters (Strategic Management) which I hope will help me land a job (strategy role) in McK, BCG, Bain. After two yrs of international work I am planning to get a MBA. Please let me know if this is sensible.

2) Will M.Sc provide me good job opportunities considering the weak European economy? Are HEC Paris, ESSEC, St. Gallen good schools to pursue Strategy Masters?

Dear Indian_guy,

While I can see why you have arrived at the path of MS->work->MBA, I'm not sure future MBA admissions committees will understand the logic or agree with it. When MBA applicants earn a MS degree in a business discipline, like strategy or finance, the first question the MBA admissions committee will ask is: why an MBA in addition to the MS? why do you need both in relation to your goals? Since you work in consulting and want to continue in consulting, a MS in Strategy makes sense. However, why then get the MBA after that? If you have solid reasoning for both degrees, then I think that course of action is fine.

An alternative path might be to retake the GMAT and apply for January/Sept 2012 admission instead. I encourage you to take a step back and really assess which path is the right one for you.

Whether or not you have the job opportunities after the MS in Strategy is a good question to ask. You need to look at these programs' connections to the consulting industry and current placement trends. Ultimately, it is your efforts that will result in a job, but knowing how connected each program is to the consulting industry is important as you want an avenue for networking.

I am currently working in a MNC consulting firm in the technology consulting division.
Background : BTech. Computer Engineering 7.8/10 from an average college in India.
GMAT: 730 AWA 5
CFA Level 1 cleared in June 2011
Current Experience : 1.5 yrs till date
Interested Colleges: HEC Paris-MS/MSc in Strategic Management
Aston University - MSc in Strategy & International Business
Rotterdam School of Management - MSc in Strategic Management
University of Strathclyde - MSc in Business Analysis & Consulting
Intake :Sept 2012

I am interested in the management consulting profiles.

I plan to do MBA after 4-5 yrs.

I have the following queries
-> What are my chances of getting into HEC MS program?
-> Any other courses/colleges that I should look at?
-> Will M.Sc provide me good job opportunities considering the weak European economy?
-> Are these MSc programs considered valuable outside Europe?

Dear Darshil,

It is hard to comment on your chances at any program with the minimal information provided; however, what you did post is very competitive for all of the MS programs on your list. Before you spend time and money on those applications, I do encourage you to think about whether or not pursuing an MBA in addition to the MS makes sense for you in relation to your goals. Perhaps it does...but when you apply for an MBA in the future, the admissions committees will want to know why you need the MBA in addition to the MS. As for how valuable the MS programs are outside of Europe and what you career opportunities will be from the MS programs, those questions are best answered by your research into each program. What has placement been like in the last 2 years? do these schools have strong ties to the consulting industry? do they have graduates working outside of Europe or predominantly in Europe? do the companies/firms you aspire to work for have relationships with these programs? The programs should be able to answer most of those questions, if the information is not already available on the website or in printed materials.

scored 730 -96 %ile( Q 49 V 40)

I'am primarily interested in pursuing MS finance degree but may go for an mba majoring in finance as i realize that maybe my age is too high and quant score too low for a good msf course

Currently employed (3 Years) with an organisation committed to upliftment of rural poor in India and mandated to do so by the Government of India ( www.nabard.org) as an assistant manager.My job involves receiving ,scrutinizing and, if found alright, ensuring the sanction of proposals for the receipt of subsidy from the government of India. the job involves scrutinizing proposals for their techno financial and socio economic parameters as well as on site inspection of the infrastructure created to assess end user viability.

passed senior secondary exam in 2002 with 87 %
graduated from delhi university in 2005 with 64 % (bachelor of commerce with honours)
completed post graduation from a regional university (full time) in 2007 -masters in commerce-49.5%


was employed part time (working as a subscriptions assistant/manager) with a charitable institution from 2007-2009 while i also prepared for various indian competitive exams.

extra curriculars:
school captain
won awards for playing basketball,participating in quizzes, and throwing shotput at school level .

job related achievement: ensured the top position of my state (Madhya Pradesh) in the successful and zero default subsidy distribution for development of agriculture marketing infrastructure development in rural areas of the state.
i want to build a niche in the field of finance/developmental finance , acquire additional work ex of 2 years or so and then go for a "grand" mba...alternatively if i dont get into an a class ms program..i'll settle for an above avg mba
