Profile Evaluation

by [email protected] » Sun Aug 26, 2012 1:08 am
Hey,

I am 22 year old male from Chennai. I have completed my engineering in Information Technology and am planning to apply to B Schools for the fall 2013 admit. Given below are some of my achievements and goals. I recently gave the GMAT a shot and got a 650 (Q 48, V 31). I wanted to get an idea as to whether this score coupled with my profile is enough to impress the top 50 B Schools. I want to do an MBA in either sales and marketing, operations or strategy. I am open schools in the US, Canada, Europe and Singapore.

Present Job:
I work as a Senior research analyst at a procurement firm that provides customized cost cutting solution for the fortune 500 companies. I joined there as a research analyst and then got promoted within 9 months to become a senior analyst. I am currently a few steps away from moving into a managerial role. Beroe-Inc is a medium sized firm with about 400-500 employees. It operates out of India but has offices all over the world. I am part of the agro space and I have worked for many top US and European clients. I do the full circle which includes setting up client calls, learning about their challenges, making a scoping document, working on the project, making the presentation which involves secondary researching, primary expert interaction and report editing, formatting and structuring, and presenting to the client. I have worked for clients like AB in Bev ( Anheuser-Busch In Bev), GlaxoSmith Kline(GSK), Subway, Sodexo, Johnson and Johnson and Amway. I have worked on a range of deliverables from full fledged market intelligence reports to price periodicals and price forecasts. I have got an above average score for my work on all occasions. The industries that I work across are Food, Beverage and Tobacco, FMCG and chemicals. A couple of major achievements include:
1) Major success on the project on Apples, Apple Juice Concentrates and Cider for the Quebec Region in Canada. The project was for AB in Bev and I got huge appreciation from all top executives of Beroe as well as the Procurement head of Ab In Bev.
2) Major success on the whey protein concentrate project for Glaxo Smith Kline. Gaxo Smith Kline ended signing a half FTE( Full time engagement) with the company after the project. Received huge appreciation from the Dairy procurement heads of GSK.

3.Core Committee member and Logistics and Hospitality head for the 3 day International Entreprenuership Summit to be held in SSN (in affiliation with other Chennai college Ecells) in January 2011.

Major Extra-Curricular College Achievements:
I have always been very passionate about entrepreneurship and was a prominent member of the National Entrepreneurship Network and also of my college Entrepreneurship development cell. I was the main coordinator/president for the SSN E-Cell and was in-charge of a number of activities ranging from network building, promoting the spirit of entrepreneurship on and off campus, coming up with new and innovative activities, team-building and so on and so forth. A few of my achievements include leading the SSN E-Cell to victory in the National E-Week championships hosted by NEN, a week long competition with over 500 colleges participating across the country for deciding the which college can host the best entrepreneurship related events. Another major milestone involves hosting a 2 day National Student Start-up event for identifying and honoring student startups across India at SSN College. Although the event was an NEN event and not an SSN E-Cell event, the event was hosted at SSN and being the host college we had to deliver. By designation I was the Logistics and Hospitality Head but was involved in almost every sphere of the event starting from team-building, marketing, talent hunting, speaker hunting, program scheduling and contract negotiation and fixing. The event was a major success and was attended by more than 1000 people.

Hobbies:
I am really passionate about tennis and I am in touch with the game. I love trekking and have gone on a couple of 14 day treks to the Himalayas and shorter treks to Kodaikannal and Parambikulam(both in Southern India).

Dear Nike,
Your profile looks very promising. You have a nice basis both in your educational background and your work experience. You work in an industry that is NOT Tech (yes!!!) and do some really interesting stuff (have you ever played tennis pro? Or semi-pro?? Schools LOVE athletes).
My first thought about what you wrote though here would be: What's the rush??? If you apply now, you will have only 24 months by the time of your matriculation, which is REALLY low for MBA programs (they like an average of 4-5 years). But not only that. It also means that you are applying with less strong stories (not because you didn't do great stuff, but because people are applying with double or triple your work experience), you are at a lower managerial level, etc. Secondly, although your GMAT is good, it's not GREAT. And I think you could definitely retake. Keep in mind that you only do this MBA thing once! So, you really want to get into the BEST school possible, which means that you want to be applying with a very STRONG application.

If you ask me, unless you have a specific personal or professional reason to rush things, retaking the GMAT and applying in one or two years will likely yield you much stronger results!

Hope this helps you out dude,

Hey Jon,

Thanks a lot for the prompt reply. Taking the GMAT again is an option, but I just wanted to find out what my chances are with this score. I just wanted to find out do I still have a chance of getting into any top MBA program with my score and profile. Let me know.

Well, I think that with your current profile and an amazing application you can maybe get in some of the lower on the list (30-50). But if you want a year and get 50 points more then everything in the 20-50 range will be yours for the taking, and even Top 10 schools you will have a shot at.
