Q: In a nut-bolt factory 180 workers are working for 6 hours a day. Out of 180 workers there are some men, some women and rest are boys. All the workers can produce either nut or bolt or both of them. A man can produce 60 nuts and 80 bolts in each hour and a woman can produce 30 nuts and 60 bolts per hour. A man is thrice as efficient as a boy and 3/2 times as effiient as a woman. Given that all men, all woman and all boys produce equal number of articles of one kind ( i.e either nut or bolt ) per hour. Working 6 hours a day , how many nuts they can produce with 52500 bolts in each day ?

a) 17500

b) 26250

c) 50580

d) 61250

e) 70560

Not sure I understand the 3/2 as efficient as a women given the numbers in the problem... I'll be honest this is a bit involved for a GMAT problem.

Hi ! Jim

Thanks for your response. Now the method we regularly use for solving work related problems is called the Unitary Method. Most of the OGs and Kaplan, MG , etc books emphasise on Unitary Method.
But there is one more efficient method for Work related problems called the Percentage efficiency method. With the efficiency method we can solve complicated work related problems with much ease and precision. Let me give a brief explanation of the percentage efficiency method:

If a person can complete his work in n days, then his one day's work = 1/n, his percentage efficiency = (1/n)*100.

I have seen GMAT 800 Range questions which are pretty involved and the Unitary Method is pretty ineffective. In fact the Unitary Method sometimes complicates the problem causing much confusion and difficulty. In such cases the percentage efficiency method comes pretty handy and effective.

Hope this clarifies. Now regarding this problem I don't have the detailed solution but the net answer which I have already posted. I will appreciate if anyone can give a detailed solution to this problem.

Best
