Fraction, Decimal, Percents Ques

by charu_mahajan » Thu Aug 23, 2012 5:20 pm
In the decimal, 2.4d7, d represents a digit from 0 to 9. If the value of the decimal rounded to the nearest tenth is less than 2.5, what are the possible values of d?

OA - 0,1,2,3,4

I understand that the value can be 0,1,2,3 so that the number is now -
2.407 or
2.417 or
2.427 or
2.437

However I do not understand this -
If the number is 2.447, will it not become 2.45 and then eventually 2.5. Please let me know about the usage of '5' in such questions.

for ur number to be rounded to 2.5 the hundredth and thousandth numbers must be >= 50
if you show 47 or 49 this is still <50 and doesn't make up half the way to round up
you can safely keep 4 as well

Hello pemdas,

Do you mean- that a 2.451 when rounded off to nearest tenth will give me 2.5?

Thanks and Regards,

yes, 2.451 or 2.450 will give you 2.5
anything below 2450 will return 2.4 with rounding up

basically, GMAT tests only rounding up - I've never seen questions rounding down (at least they were not official questions asking rounding down)
