MBA in midst of a successful venture

by rushabhgala » Wed Jul 25, 2012 11:17 am
Hi,

I am a male,Indian, have the usual engineering background ( not iit though) mad have worked in technology for couple of years before doing an MBA from India and interning with kpmg. I decided not to join kpmg after college and started my own wealth management desk managing offshore as well as domestic India centric investments. I have one of the known wealth management desks in the industry now and had started an early stage fund a couple of years back. Have done around 16 investments in Indian startups and am one of the first ones to do start up funding in India. As of now, i am running an organisation of 14 people with 3 very fast growing verticals and are expanding globally now. At this stage I am doing pretty well but I intend to do a global MBA again from one of the ivy league schools if ji can get it. Otherwise it wouldnt make a lot of sense to look at programmes beyond that as the opportunity cost is very high too. I did take the GMAT and got a 720. I am confident of getting a higher score if that is needed.

I wanted to know what's your sense on my profile. Does the harvards / stanfords / whartons etc look doable with my profile amongst large pool of Indians applying. I do not have excellent academics - pretty good though. But I do have a lot of extracurricular and social activities up my sleeve.

Hi rushabhgala,

Unfortunately there is not have enough information written for me to specifically evaluate your profile. Your GMAT score is around the averages of the schools you are considering and it does look like you have strong work experience. Admissions teams are looking for candidates who have made an impact, which is important.

Remember though that all of the reasons why a top program would admit you are in the details of your work experience, personal experiences, personality, values and overall story.

Here is some school specific advice for some of the programs you are considering: https://www.stacyblackman.com/business-school-hub/

Cheers,

Thanks for your inputs, Stacy. really appreciate it.

So in terms of more specifics -

Wealth management piece manages close to 60mn$ till now - all built from scratch. Venture Startup fund is of 2mn $ and plan to raise another big one. But feel the need to get a top MBA degree, network, exposure before I take that big leap.

Community work - Started a not for profit venture to preserve old literature written more than 1000 years back and digitize / preserve / reprint it. Have managed to build a huge team there and raised donations of more than 4mn$ in it already.

Extra currics: Started TiE bizworld in India to foster entrepreneurship in school children. Coached more than 1500 kids in last 1 year and growing. Active mentor and speaker in lot of tech / business schools and entrepreneurship cells here.

Personal qualities: strong leadership and entrepreneurial fire. Have built and managed teams from scratch. Analytics and data driver person when it comes to decision making.

Hope this would give you a fair idea to comment on it.

Thanks,
Rushabh
