The number of undergraduate degrees in engineering awarded by colleges and universities in the United
States increased by more than twice from 1978 to 1985.
(A) increased by more than twice
(B) increased more than two times
(C) more than doubled
(D) was more than doubled

In this I am confused between A/C/D. Kindly advise.

increased should be followed by "more than a factor of two" and not twice which is an adverb.

So, A and B are eliminated.

In D, was more than indicates a comparison. For instance, the number of footballs was more than the number of basketballs. Here it is saying that the number of universities was more than doubled, we cannot compare number with doubled.

C is correct. More than doubled is clear and correct.

"More than doubled" is precise and fits better into the sentence..
But please share the OA..
