Fro both the stems we have no idea about price of apple/pounds !!

Stem 1 says : pears/lb is 50cents more than apple/lb
that means : if x is the price of apple/lb for apple
the pear/lb price is (x+.50)

And question asks here is 5x/(x+.50) is how much ?
So not determinable from stem 1.In sufficient !

From stem 2 : price of pear/lb = 1.5x (assuming x as the price of apple/lb)

Now according to question : 5x/(1.5x) which is determinable ! So sufficient.

I am missing the last step.

I see that 1.5A = P

So if I want to know how much 5 pounds of apples will buy me in terms of pears -- how does that fit into the equation? Thanks.

The question asks "How many pounds of pears, which is 1.5 times the cost of apple/pound, can be bought with the price of 5lb apple"

So if the cost of 5lb apple is 5x (x being the cost pf apple/lb)
then we have cost of pear/lb is 1.5x.

So no. of pounds of pears =total amount/cost of pears/lb
