The problem with the sentence is that historian doesn't match up with their--so the singular subject has a plural possessive pronoun.

We can quickly eliminate A, B, and C. D has a misplaced modifier--don't mean to get technical but it might help to look that up. The "it" is the subject which is somehow "writing".

An easier example,

Being on fire, he stared at the house. That means he was on fire. The correct version is "Being on fire, the house grabbed his attention." Or some other such fix.

Correct answer: E
