Chances of Harvard 2+2 Acceptance

by gillks2 » Sun Feb 12, 2012 7:43 pm
Hello, I am an Honours Life Science student at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and am seeking admission to the Harvard 2+2 program because I lack credibility in the business job market due to my degree not being business related.

My stats are
GPA 3.7/4
GMAT 720

Background:
I am a male who comes from a family who is economically below the poverty line in Ontario and am the first person in my immediate and extended family to be eligible to complete a university degree. I have worked 4 summer jobs for canada's largest screen printing and promotional marketing company eventually becoming a project manager in my last 3 summers. I managed projects that totaled revenue of approximately $3 million over the 3 summers and have extreme admiration and respect for my work from the CEO of the company and have glowing recommendation letters. Also, I volunteer at my local church counseling impoverished youth and aiding in drug addiction rehabilitation. Finally, I am an avid marathon runner completing a marathon every year for the past 3 years.

I am just wondering if i stand a shot for the final stage of applications coming up in april.

Let's evaluate your situation:

1. Academics - Your GMAT and GPA are solid
2. First in family to attend college - very compelling
3. Summer experience - good
4. Community involvement - good
5. Marathon running - nice

In fact, the only red flag surrounding your candidacy is your expressed belief that you lack credibility in the job market due to your major. Eliminate that negativity, and craft a killer set of essays that articulates why you want an MBA from HBS.

You've got a decent shot, but your story (essays) will need to be outstanding. Good luck.

Hi Gillks2,

I agree that your candidacy seems quite solid. The very fact that you have had such a successful experience in your role over the last four summers speaks volumes about your potential business success. I encourage you to flesh out your goals (you can't state in your HBS application that you aren't qualified for a job in business since two years of professional experience are a requirement for admission).

Best,

Stacey
