OG=Question 67 - 2nd Edition

by shanice » Thu Jul 19, 2012 1:00 am
What was the ratio of the number of cars to the number of trucks produced by Company X last year?

(1)Last year, if the number of cars produced by Company X had been 8 percent greater, the number of
cars produced would have been 150 percent of the number of trucks produced by Company X.

(2)Last year Company X produced 565,000 cars and 406,800 trucks.

Answer is D.

I have no problem with the 2nd statement as I got it right but can't seem to understand the 1st statement.

Thanks in advance.

I like to approach these questions by plonking down a big "equals" sign:

=

Then, decide what goes either side of it. In this case, we've got no. cars + 8%. If we let c=cars, this can be expressed as 1.08c:

1.08c =

For the right hand side, we have 150% of the number of trucks. Let's call trucks t:

1.08c = 1.5t

Finally, how do we represent the ratio? Cars:trucks is c/t. So let's rearrange:

c/t = 1.5/1.08

Fortunately since this is data sufficiency, we don't have to perform the calculation. SUFFICIENT.

Thank you, Willrc. I understand it now.
