If x and y are positive integers, what is the remainder when 10^x + y is divided by 3?

(1)x=5
(2)y=2

Answer is B - Statement 2 alone is sufficient.

Please help me with the above question. Thank you in advance.

We have two components here: one is 10^x and the other is y.

Notice that 10^x /3 will always give a remainder of 1, irrespective of the value of x. Say for example 10^1 gives 1 as remainder, 10^2 gives 1, and so on...

So, the value of the remainder of 10^x + y will be determined by the value of y.

Option B provides the value of y.

So, B is sufficient.

option A is inconsequential.
