Q6:

In the figure shown, line segment AD is parallel to line segment BC. What is the value of x?
(1) y = 50
(2) z = 40

A. Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient.
B. Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient.
C. BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient.
D. EACH statement ALONE is sufficient.
E. Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient.

from 1:
Point D could be anywhere on line AD
Insufficient

from 2:
Point A could be anywhere on line AD
Insufficient

Combining 1 and 2:
Sum of all angles of a triangle is 180.
Sufficient

IMO answer C

Didn't understand the explanation. As per the answer sheet, correct answer is A, although i am confused whether that is correct or not.

for St 1:

draw two line AD and BC on a piece of paper. Now draw a transversal CA such that angle y=40.... Now, with just this much information, one can plot the point Z anywhere on line AD and depending on its position the value of x will change.

Similarly for St 2.

HTH!!

Answer A is correct.
Since BC || AD X and Y will be complimentary angles and will be equal to 180 hence suff
Stmnt 2: Z=40 BCD = 140 but we will not know how much is ACD. Hence not suff
Hope it helps

The picture is drawn incorrectly. In the original problem x = angle ACB (not angle ACD, as shown above).
