by anju » Wed Jun 04, 2008 9:37 am
Although Napoleon’s army entered Russia with far more supplies than they had in their previous campaigns, it had provisions for only twenty-four days.
(A) they had in their previous campaigns
(B) their previous campaigns had had
(C) they had for any previous campaign
(D) in their previous campaigns
(E) for any previous campaign
Why is C incorrect? OA is E. Pls. explain?

just apply simple POE.
the non underlined part of the sentence, already, has a past participle (had provisions).
so A,B n C r eliminated.

D compares the total amount of supplies in all the previous campaigns with the supplies that Napoleon’s army had when they entered Russia.
Hence D is correct.

the intended meaning of the sentence is to compare the supplies that Napoleon’s army had when they entered Russia with any one previous campaign of Napolean army. Hence E is correct.

hope this helps.

Thanks!

C is incorrect because of the pronoun "they." Its antecedent is the singular "army," so it does not agree in number. In other options, "their" is used, again incorrectly referring to the singular "army." This eliminates A, B, C, and D, leaving E as the only viable option.
