1000 SC Q 13

by punit.kaur.mba » Tue May 27, 2008 1:37 pm
13. A majority of the international journalists surveyed view nuclear power stations as unsafe at present but that they will, or could, be made sufficiently safe in the future.
(A) that they will, or could,
(B) that they would, or could,
(C) they will be or could
(D) think that they will be or could
(E) think the power stations would or could

OA is (D) - Pls highlight to view the answer

My answer was (E)

In the OA, isnt "they" ambiguous?

someone, please give an explaination for each choice, in detail

Also,

what is the difference between "will" and "would". When should we use will and when should we use would? Both refer to future..

Eg:- We will do that
We would do that -- Is it right to use "would" here?

What is the difference between these two sentences?

Will is certainty and would is uncertainty.

I agree with you that the A majority of the international journalists is plural where as International journalist majority is singular.

I felt that the "they" is ambiguous and picked E. Especially given that both A majority of the international journalists and nuclear power stations are plural and they can refer to the closest noun, which is nuclear power stations. Is the addition of word think making they unambiguous? NPS can't think apparently.

Also not sure because I went with B. Dont you need to have parallelism? That is, would and could?
ON MY WAY TO HBS......

HD,

You are right. Will and would are NOT parallel and that is the exact reason why I went with E
