965. In many upper-class Egyptian homes, French was spoken within the family, just as it had once been among the Russian aristocracy.
(A) just as it had once been among the Russian aristocracy
(B) just like it once been among the Russian aristocracy
(C) just as Russian aristocracy had once done
(D) similar to what the Russian aristocracy had once done
(E) like what had once been done by the Russian aristocracy

I would go for D.

"like" is used to refer to nouns and pronouns.
So B and E are out.
among is used if there are more than 2 things involved (between for 2 things). Here only Russian aristocracy is referred. This gets rid of a A.

From C and D, the sentence intends to describe a similarity between epyptian homes and russian aristocracy therefore according to me use of "similar" is more appropriate. Hence D.

What is the OA

Ans is C

In my opinion the act of speaking French is being compared.

I'll choose A

I don't like the use of "done" in C, D, E. The act of speaking French in the family is not a one time action. Hence I prefer the use of "been", as it reflects continuity in action. Option B does not use the verb properly; and so I'll stick to A.

Although I agree with the earlier post that "among" is used for more than 2 objects, and hence I would prefer to read "among the Russian Aristocrats" OR "in the Russian Aristocracy".
