1000 SC q24

by dextar » Mon May 19, 2008 8:15 pm
24. A recent study has found that within the past few years, many doctors had elected early retirement rather than face the threats of lawsuits and the rising costs of malpractice insurance.
(A) had elected early retirement rather than face
(B) had elected early retirement instead of facing
(C) have elected retiring early instead of facing
(D) have elected to retire early rather than facing
(E) have elected to retire early rather than face

Isn't this sc cheking for parallelism?

I think it's 'D' here.

It checks the use of tense usage and the usage of "rather + verb+ing ".
Please correct me if i am wrong.

Trying hard for betterment of my vebal aptitude.

Error Type : Idiomatic Error

Correct choice is D.

idiom "elect to"

Parallelism is being maintained in D,FACING the threats of lawsuits and the RISING costs ....

A,B,C creates idiomatic error while E creates ambiguity.

I will go with E

It check parallelism to retire and to face
have elected to retire early rather than (to) face....

Earlier I chose an answer as D for parallelism between facing and rising cost.. but i believe that is not being tested as if this was being tested then the correct parallelism should be "the facing" and "the rising"

Any thoughts?

I will also go with E.

For example: this is the correct parallelism:
I prefer starting early rather than leaving things to the last minute.

(D) have elected to retire early rather than facing (incorrect, because retire and facing not parallel)
(E) have elected to retire early rather than face (correct, retire and face)

it does look deceiving at first, you think because of the word "and" facing and rising need to be parallel because of the list.

however, "face the threats of lawsuits and the rising costs of malpractice insurance" is parallel because you can distribute the word "face" to second part of the sentence.

ex. "face the threats of lawsuits and face the rising costs of malpractice insurance"

answer is E.

(D) have elected to retire early rather than facing
(E) have elected to retire early rather than face

"to retire " and "(to) face" is parallel .
and "threats" is parallel to "rising costs".
we should not make mistake of parallel a "verb"(face) to an "adjective"(rising).

thnks.

answer should be "D" as facing the threats is parallel to the rising costs
