increased vs increasing?

"For some birds, the sense of smell appears to play a role in navigation, since pigeons with surgically removed olfactory nerves have been found to have increased difficulty in homing."

Can someone please explain why "increased" is used as opposed to "increasing"? Could both be used?

I am finding it increasingly difficult to walk without a stick.
I found incresed difficulty to walk without a stick.

Increasingly difficulty !!! is AWKWARD
