A - Opening modifier modifies ENGLAND - this means England had its beginnig in 1788; Note, ITS corresponds to ENGLAND'S when we want to refer to actio performed by ENGLAND.

B/D - Opening modifier modifies ENGLAND - this means England had its beginnig in 1788

E - use of both DURING and A PERIOD redundant; A PERIOD modifies A HUNDRED YEARS - means A HUNDRED YEARS is A PERIOD BEGINNNING IN 1788

C - OVER A PERIOD is a prep modifier can modify action perfomed by England; IMO
