American University - Kogod School

by Hayek33 » Mon Feb 06, 2012 3:54 pm
I am curious to know if anyone has any information about the MSA at
American U in D.C. I know the location is great for jobs and internships
but was hoping for a little bit more specific insight regarding the program.
Thanks.

I don't really know much about Masters of Accounting programs that much, but I live near DC and have researched the schools for their MBA programs.

American has a small business school, and it has a good reputation within the Washington area, and the general reputation of AU is very good. However, as a business school (not necessarily Master of Accounting), AU does not have the reputation of Georgetown (no Master of Accounting I believe) or Maryland.

Thanks for the reply. I am looking to get into the government sector, possibly regulation and compliance, so I am definitely interested in reputation as it applies to the D.C area. I also applied to UMD-College Park but it is about $55,000 for tuition alone. Also, how does American stack up against GWU as I have also applied there? Thanks in advance.

GW has a relatively new business school building with Duques Hall and I liked the facility. I'm not that familiar with Master of Accounting program. At least with the MBA program, GW is not a Top 10 school, but it is also a respected institution in the Washington DC area. It also has a top notch international relations school on site and the campus is nearby the IMF and World Bank.

As a general university, American is not as reputable as GW even though both schools are great schools. As you noted, DC is a government-town, and the flagship, or most notable graduate schools for both of these universities are the law schools. The Washington College of Law (AU) is a Top 40 school or so every year. The GW Law School has produced a number of Supreme Court clerks over the last decade. Both AU and GW ride a lot off their law school's reputations which makes the DC area a top legal market, so regardless which school you end up at, good chance you will get to interact with some law students also interested in your area.
