Hi everyone,

I have a difficulty with the answer of the following question of one of the GMAT's sample test:

When N is divided by T, the quotient is S and the remainder is V. Which of the following expressions is equal to N?

A - ST
B - S + V
C - ST +V
D - T(S+V)
E - T(S-V)

Before I took this as an easy question, but the answer is not deducible to me. I calculated with an example:
N = 35, T=17 thus N/T = 35/17 = 2 + 1/17, which means S=2 and V=1/17

In order to get N (35) I multiply by 17 getting: 35 = 2(17) + 1/17(17) thus T(S+V), answer D. That is what I assumed, but it's wrong. Can anyone explain me my mistake please?

you have wrongly assumed the remainder as fraction in your example (selected in read)
the remainder should be not 1/17 but 1 and the correct quotient remainder formula will look as following

either N/T=S+V/T or N=ST+V
N=35, T=17, S=2, V=1 -> either 35/17=2+1/17 or 35=2*17+1

the remainder isn't fraction but whole number

11 = 5 x 2 + 1

N = S x T + V

In general, if a positive integer, x when divided by positive integer, y, then x = qy + r, where q is the quotient and r is the remainder (0 ≤ r < y).

Therefore, N = ST + V

The correct answer is C.

Yes the correct answer is C. The formula or format for division goes like this:



Dividend = Quotient * Divisor + Remainder
