Need urgent help to Reapply and seek admission

by pri04 » Sun Aug 21, 2011 11:52 pm
Hi,

I will be reapplying to Vanderbilt Owen School of Business this year for class of fall 2012. I had applied last year but i did not receive an admit. But I am now desperately seeking admission at Owen because this year as my husband joined Vanderbilt University for his MS course (I am newly married).

While he is in US , I am in India alone. My company finds me as an asset and in order to help me join my husband this year , they provided me an Intra Company transfer work visa to US and also allowed me to stay and work from Nashville. I was suppose to come to Nashville along with my husband on Aug 20th this year but unfortunately due to a sudden market crash in US, the job posting for which I was being sent to Nashville has got cancelled. My company is still trying their best to send me to Nashville as I hold a valid work visa but they are still uncertain.

Meanwhile , I am want to join Owen not only because I am interested in an MBA program program but aslo I can live with my husband. I had secured an admit at George Washington University's Global MBA program for fall 2011 but I did not accept the admission thinking that my company is giving me an excellent offer to stay with my husband, earn a good salary as well as work on project management. Now that this unfortunate thing has happened with me, I am trying to secure an admit at Owen, reapplying at GWU.
My gmat score is 640 (V36,Q41, AW6)
Toefl 111 out of 130 (CBT)
Work ex - 4+ years in IT

Please advise me how can I improve my application in order to secure an admit. I know that everyone would ask me to retake gmat but that is not an option for me now as I am mentally very stressed and I know I will perform really bad if I retake it.

Thanks in advance1

Okay,
Things you CAN do to help your application:
1. Focus heavily on why you want to go to the school when you write your essays. Tell them the truth about you wanting to be near your husband, but also show them that the school fits your goals perfectly.
2. Do ANYthing you can to show them EVERY single advancement, new achievement, new responsibilities, etc. in your work and out of work to show them that you have worked hard to make yourself a better candidate
3. Don't be desperate! :) There's no reason to! Make the best strategy you can. (You might want to look into what other MBA options you have) Write the best application you can, and send it in.

You can also retake your GMAT and try to obtain a higher score which will help your admissions chances.

There is no kind way to say this, so here goes. If they rejected you last time, then you need to show material progress on as many fronts as possible. This is not always easy in one year. The most expedient way to do this is to kill the gmat. I know you are mentally stressed, but there is no magic potion here. "Beat the gmat", have somebody take a critical look at your essays, and demonstrate greater managerial responsibility in your job.

Good luck and get tough!

Yeah you need to kill it on the essays. Don't know if you have time to re-take the GMAT and improve it by 100 or so points, but that would help significantly.

Being Indian hurts (as it does in almost every school in the US), so they expect a lot more out of you to get you in. See if you can differentiate yourself as a "different" Indian in some way. You're female so that's one thing, but IT again hurts.

Like others have said, really do well on your essays, when someone reads your essays it should sound like you're pure Owen-MBA.

Best of luck!
