Aside: 2 hours and 40 minutes = 2 2/3 hours

Average rate = (total distance)/(total time)
= (18 2/3)/(2 2/3)
= (56/3)/(8/3)
= (56/3)(3/8)
= 7 = A

We know that average speed = total distance/total time
Here distance = 18 2/3 miles = 56/3 miles
Time = 2 hours 40 minutes = 2 hours + 40/60 hour = 2 2/3 hour = 8/3 hr
So, average speed = 56/3 / 8/3 = 7 miles per hour

The correct answer is A.
