Here is the solution:
from the question stem
0.72m+0.8f = number of students applied to college
from (a) m+f=840 (insufficient)
from (b) 0.72m+0.8f = 0.75(m+f)
solve this eq to get f=3/5m
m+f = m+3/5m=8/5m
or m = 5/8 (total students)
